There are a lot of stereotypes and negative generalizations placed against Black women. “Yeah, they are some weave wearing, nappy headed, mouthy ass females.” These are some of the descriptors that a Black woman faces in her daily life. It is accepted in society to criticize a Black woman while we put other races, especially Caucasian women on pedestals. Which is why I decided to write a post about all of the wonderful qualities that Black women possess. This post is meant to deflect some of the negative generalizations that Black women experience. The Black woman, often copied but never duplicated.

1. We have the ability to make something out of nothing

I can recall my beautiful chocolate mom, making me spam and eggs for breakfast, cut up hot dogs with spaghetti O’s mixed in for lunch. We did not have much, but I cannot recall a day when I went hungry. That is what you call making something out of absolutely nothing. A trait that a lot of other women cannot grasp.

2. We are natural born survivors

Black women have been through so many trials and tribulations through our history that the skill of being a survivor is in our DNA. It takes a lot to make a Black woman give up on what she desires and or feel she needs.

3. We age gracefully

You ever look at certain other races and see how once they become older they wrinkle up immediately? While the age old “Black Don’t Crack” has become a mantra for Black women. Millions of Black Grandmas around the world still have beautiful skin.

4. We come in different colors and tints.

Like a Black man, a Black woman can come in every complexion you can imagine. From honey colored to cinnamon to reddish brown, to almond to the deepest of darkest chocolates. How many other ethnicities come in so many varieties? None.

5. We naturally have the features that a lot of other women from different ethnicities have to pay for.

Some may call it a gift or a curse in some cases. Especially if you are trying to shop for jeans. Black women have naturally curvy bodies and frames. Even the most petite Black woman will still have a rump to fill out her jeans just right. We have natural full lips that do not need collagen or special lipstick to create a mock fullness. Even our hair is naturally thicker than many other ethnicities. It can grow to be full and long and keep a beautiful curl or lay just right.

6. We have swagga through the roof.
Have you ever noticed an older Black woman that you admired because… Well, it was something about her that you could not put your finger on. Whether it was the way she dressed, how when she entered a room every man in it turned their head, or how her heart was so big that people immediately drew to her. This is what the younger generation call swagga. The way the person walks, talks, the slightest body language is almost hypnotic for onlookers. Even Black female performers have their own untouchable swagga that cannot be duplicated. From Tina Turner’s iconic presence to Beyonce’ command of a stage to Tyra and Naomi who have a cat walk that you cannot buy. We bring a certain level of confidence to our everyday life and our work like no one else can and it shines through.

I have begun to see a much clearer picture of the state of black youth in America, a glimpse of the impact of removing their feeling of dignity and respect; of the media that addicts them to a narcissistic materialism and a depreciated view of themselves. I am, we are, all asked to be bigger, to give more, and I am convinced that the strength needed for the task which lies ahead is within our collective capacities to fulfill:

The ‘work’ is to heal the wounds still visible beneath the draped gold and elaborate inked pictures on the skin of those who live in dark bodies, canvases already masterfully painted in beautiful warm rich hues, from henna to ebony; beauty totally obscured by thirty second sound bites and bits and pieces of distorted images most often crafted by those with canvases absent of color.

It just may be that this ‘work’ of healing must be more of an ‘awakening’ a re-visioning of our humanity, as an amorphous sculpture perfectly molded, impervious to vandalism or defacement, a form timeless and endless, crafted in a workshop by a master artist whose sole material is …love.

I can not wait until the DVD is in stock again so that I can buy it. I had the pleasure of viewing the DVD while in my racism class this past week. Dr. Joy touched on so many valid points and reminded me of all the pain, despair, and mental anguish our ancestors have gone through. It was so profound that it made me want to appreciate life so much more. Also, it put so much about the black family into perspective that I want to really learn more about my history and make changes to even the way that I think. The DVD is so very powerful and moving…. It really is a must see.

This short dvd is very thought provoking. The plight of the black race in America is a topic that will never die. The stereotypes, lack of eduacation, and jail culture have all influenced our youth. The sad thing is that many will not see the dvd. There will also be people who will watch the dvd and feel affected and those who will watch the dvd and say “thats just how it is.” I like to think that if you are able to help make a difference in someones life great or small you should do so in a positive manner. sometimes in life all it takes is one kind heart, word, or true act of selflessness to leave an impression on an individual. So ladies lets do our part to make a difference in any way that we can.

Whats been going on…

Well yesterday was the beginning of the new semester at school so happy to be back. I’m taking some very enlightening class can’t wait to absorb the knowledge and new perspectives that comes along with being in college. Criminology, Racism as a sociological analysis, Criminal Theory, and Statistics. So by now you can guess that I am a Criminal Justice/Psych major! I love to learn although the work may be hard the lessons are so much greater. Ladies knowledge is key to understanding life. Do not live your life according to what someone else says. Find out your true person and gain a better understanding of society. When you take the blinders off you see the world for what it is; beauty and pain.

I’ve also finally come to my decision to go natural and lose my excess weight FINALLY! So I will officially begin my 4 day diet by Dr. Ian. I am so ready for a change in my life and lifestyle. So my goal is to lose my 100+ lbs and go natural by my b-day. Which just happens to be the 1st day of June. Most likely I’ll be ready by then to do my big chop. So I had my last relaxer this past month. It’s so amazing that all it takes is the energy to complete a thought, an action, or just a decision. So ladies don’t be afraid to change the things that you know you should or want to. I’ve been using my issue of weight as an excuse for the past six or so years. However, I have decided that my weight issue stops now. There are to many resources made available as well as, information at my finger tips. If you determine your destiny why not make the best out of life? I want to be the best me I can be. Overall, I want to be healthy and happy with who God created me to be. The big girl issue is one I’ve dealt with since I was a child. Now, I’m a woman, wife, and mother; I have to be the best example to my family. I’m not content with where I am so therefore, I’ve made a conscience decision to change what I don’t like. Instead of complaining or hiding, I am going to confront and solve my issue head on. Today I take a stand to be the best in all my endeavors great or small.

So ladies anything is possible. Just keep dreaming, striving, and achieving and things have a way of working themselves out. Look to the hills for which cometh your strength.

New Album Reviews

Ok let me first start by saying the music business as a way to make money is official over. Great got that out of the way! I just finished listening to Whitney Houston’s I Look to You and Trey Songz Ready. Yeah I know they don’t come out until next week but of course all artists albums are leaking weeks in advance which is the reason for poor music sales. However, I absolutely love both albums hands down.

Whitney’s new album showcases that all hope is not lost with her singing abilities. Although, I must say she will never be where she once was unless she gets back in the grove over the next few years. Out of 12 tracks on the album I was a fan of 10 these days thats a blessing.

Trey Songz didn’t miss a beat with the Ready album. Trey really put it down ladies. Its a classic R&B album.
